Gillette Children’s Stephen Sundberg, MD, has worked as a pediatric orthopedic surgeon at Gillette Children's for more than 36 years. He has served in various roles, including leading the Orthopedics department. He will retire December 31, 2022.
“I first worked at Gillette during my orthopedic fellowship in the 1980s, but I was familiar with Gillette long before that. My father was an Orthopedic Surgery resident at the University of Minnesota and was a staff surgeon on the hip service at Gillette for fourteen years. When he was a resident at Gillette in the 1960’s he would take me to the hospital when he made weekend rounds, so I remember the old location in Phalen and all the dogs, birds, and entertainment they brought in to enrich the kids’ hospital stays.
I’ve been blessed to be at Gillette during a phase of phenomenal growth over the past 30 years. When I started, Gillette was performing 500 surgeries a year – now our volume is almost 10 times that. When I started, we had one location that provided orthopedic care – now we have all these expanded specialties and services and locations that are so vital to the children who need it. It has been exciting to see the evolution and development of Gillette reaching and helping so many more kids.”
