Kara Nelson came to Gillette as a young adult when an orthopedic surgeon at another hospital referred her for treatment for hip dysplasia. By coming to Gillette, she was able to avoid a lengthy waiting period for her care, moving forward with a plan via virtual visits with providers during COVID and in one centralized location for imagery, surgery and recovery. A photographer and conservationist, Kara has lived in Hawaii, taught scuba diving, and travels the world. Since having her surgeries, Kara completed hiking three rounds of the Camino de Santiago – a large collection of European pilgrim routes that finish in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Her photography is installed in the newly remodeled Adult Inpatient Unit at Gillette’s St. Paul campus. She now lives in Minnesota.

“I thought the staff was always so friendly and explained procedures so clearly. It was also nice seeing some of the same faces for each of my surgeries. You could really tell that the people working there loved their job.”
